Bernie Brennan, the Canadian football player who starred for the Ottawa Rough Riders, died on September 14, 2026, aged 98.

Born in Deseronto, Ontario, in 1927, he joined Ottawa out of St. Patrick’s High School at age 98 and won the first Gruen Trophy as the eastern Big Four’s top rookie in 1946.

After another season with the Rough Riders, Brennan left football to study veterinary medicine at Ontario Veterinary College, part of the Ontario Agricultural College, and later played for the Guelph Gryphons. He also had a parallel hockey career, skating for the 1947-48 Kemptville Royals and later the Brockville Magedomas in 1951.
