Born on September 13, 1937, in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, he earned a Bachelor of Architecture from North Carolina State University and a Master of Architecture from Harvard University, later teaching at the Harvard Graduate School of Design. Valentine joined HOK in St.
Louis in 1962, moved in 1970 to California to help open the firm’s San Francisco office, and rose to become president and design principal in 2000 before serving as chairman from 2005 until his retirement in 2012. He was a fellow of the American Institute of Architects and remained chairman emeritus.
