Averil Cameron, a British teacher and historian, died on April 7, 2026, aged 86.

Born Averil Millicent Sutton in Leek, Staffordshire, on February 8, 1940, she was the only child of Tom Roy Sutton and Millicent Sutton. She read literae humaniores at Somerville College, Oxford, where she won the Edwards Scholarship in 1960 and the Rosa Hovey Scholarship in 1962.

She later served as professor of Late Antique and Byzantine History at the University of Oxford and as Warden of Keble College, Oxford, from 1994 to 2010. From 1962 to 1980, she was married to the classical scholar Alan Cameron, and they had a son and a daughter.
