Seán Ó Laoire, an Irish architect and urban designer, died on April 7, 2026, aged 79.
Born in Dublin on July 13, 1946, he studied architecture at University College Dublin, graduating in 1970, and later earned a master’s degree in urban design at the University of California, Los Angeles. In 1979, he co-founded Murray Ó Laoire Architects in Limerick with Hugh Murray.
He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Institute of the Architects of Ireland in 1993, became vice-president in 1995 and was elected president in 2008. While a student at UCD, he was among those who led a revolt that removed the head of the school over concerns about its recognition by the Royal Institute of British Architects.
