After graduating from Vanderbilt University, he worked as an apprentice under trainer Edward A. Neloy in the New York City area. Hancock later built Stone Farm in Paris, Kentucky, into a respected breeding and racing operation, and the farm earned the family its first Kentucky Derby victory. He was also identified as a composer of bluegrass music.
