Greene was the Democratic Party’s nominee in the 2010 United States Senate election in South Carolina, where he was defeated by incumbent Republican Sen. Jim DeMint.

He was the first African-American to be nominated for U.S. Senate by a major party in South Carolina. Born in Florence, South Carolina, Greene earned a bachelor’s degree in political science from the University of South Carolina in 2000.

Alvin Michael Greene (August 30, 1977 – March 3, 2026) was an American politician. He was the Democratic Party’s nominee in the 2010 United States Senate election in South Carolina, and was defeated by incumbent Republican senator Jim DeMint, 61.48% to 27.65%. Greene was the first African-American to be nominated for U.S. Senate by a major party in South Carolina.
