Axelrad, an American rabbi and author, died on September 18, 2026, aged 87. A Reform rabbi, educator and community leader, he helped foster the American Jewish counterculture of the 1960s through the 1980s.
Axelrad served as Jewish chaplain at Brandeis University and as executive director of its B’nai B’rith Hillel Foundation from 1965 to 1999. Born in Brooklyn, he studied at the Yeshivah of Flatbush, earned a degree in sociology from Columbia University, and later received an M.A. and rabbinic ordination from Hebrew Union College–Jewish Institute of Religion in New York. His books included Refusenik, Call to Conscience and Meditations of a Maverick Rabbi.
