Akihiro Miwa, the Japanese singer, actor and drag queen whose career spanned more than seven decades, died on June 20, 2026, at age 91.
Born Akihiro Maruyama in Nagasaki on May 15, 1935, he moved to Tokyo in 1952 and began performing as a professional cabaret singer in Ginza at 17, drawing on French chanson traditions. He became widely known in 1957 with “Me Que Me Que” and later gained additional recognition through film roles including Princess Mononoke and Howl’s Moving Castle.
Miwa also worked as a director, composer and author, and used the names Akihiro Maruyama and Shingo Maruyama during his career.
