Karunadasa, a Sri Lankan Buddhist scholar, died on April 26, 2026. Born in 1934 in British Ceylon, he was known for his work in Buddhist Studies, with particular specialisation in Early Buddhism and Theravada Abidhamma.

He earned a First Class Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Ceylon in 1958 and a Ph.D. from the University of London in 1963. Karunadasa later served as an emeritus professor at the University of Kelaniya, where he was dean of the Faculty of Arts and director of the university’s Postgraduate Institute of Pali and Buddhist Studies. He died in Colombo at the age of 92.

Yakupitiyage Karunadasa (1934 – 26 April 2026) was a Sri Lankan scholar in Buddhist Studies. His main areas of specialisation were Early Buddhism and Theravada Abidhamma.
