Karunadasa, a Sri Lankan Buddhist scholar, died on April 26, 2026, at the age of 92. Born in 1934, he specialized in Early Buddhism and Theravada Abidhamma.

He earned a first-class Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Ceylon in 1958 and a Ph.D. from the University of London in 1963. Karunadasa was an emeritus professor at the University of Kelaniya, where he served as dean of the Faculty of Arts and director of its Postgraduate Institute of Pali and Buddhist Studies. He received an honorary D.Litt. from the university in 2002.
