Wolfgang Haber, the German biologist who helped establish landscape ecology, died on August 13, 2026, aged 100.
Born in Datteln in 1925, he studied botany, zoology, chemistry and geography at the University of Münster, Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München, the University of Basel, the University of Stuttgart and the University of Hohenheim. He later worked as a research assistant to Heinrich Walter in Hohenheim from 1957 to 1962, then served as curator and deputy director of the Museum of Natural History in Münster from 1962 to 1966 before taking up a chair at the Technical University of Munich.
Haber also influenced nature conservation policy in Germany and abroad, including work on biotope mapping and the development of the Bavarian Forest National Park. His books included Die unbequemen Wahrheiten der Ökologie, Landwirtschaft und Naturschutz and Die Welt im Anthropozän.
