Wang Yongguo, a Chinese vice admiral who commanded the South Sea Fleet from 1994 to 2002, died on May 7, 2026.

He was 87. Born in November 1938 in Buliu, Rongcheng County, Shandong, Wang enlisted in the People’s Liberation Army in January 1956 and served in the People’s Liberation Army Navy.

He later served in Fujian after the Second Taiwan Strait Crisis, studied at the Advanced Vocational School of the People’s Liberation Army Navy, and joined the Chinese Communist Party in 1961. He also served as a representative to the 13th, 14th and 15th National Congress of the Chinese Communist Party and as a member of the 10th National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference.
