Vishwa Nath Sharma, the Indian military officer who served as chief of the army staff from 1988 to 1990, died on July 31, 2026, aged 96.
Known as General V N Sharma, he was born in London on June 4, 1930, and was commissioned into the Indian Army in June 1950 after training at the Indian Military College. He became the first president’s commissioned officer to lead the Army, later commanding the 66th Armoured Regiment and a mountain brigade in an insurgency-affected area.
Sharma also served in the 1965 war against Pakistan in the Lahore sector and was awarded the Ati Vishisht Seva Medal for distinguished service. His honours included the Param Vishisht Seva Medal and the Ati Vishisht Seva Medal.
