Born in Brooklyn, New York, he attended Friends Academy in Long Island before earning a bachelor’s degree from Carnegie Mellon University in 1967. He went on to receive a master’s degree from Polytechnic University in 1971 and a doctorate from the University of Tennessee in 1974.
Van Brunt later joined the University of South Carolina, where he served as a professor in the department of chemical engineering until 2019 and was named a distinguished professor during his career.
