Battle, an American diplomat who served as ambassador to Lebanon, died on October 3, 2026, aged 85. Also known as Vincent Martin Battle, he represented the United States in Beirut from August 13, 2001, to August 16, 2004, and had been named ambassador to Lebanon in 1994.
A native of Teaneck, New Jersey, Battle earned his bachelor’s degree from Georgetown University and later received a master’s degree in 1967 and a Ph.D. from Columbia University in 1974. He joined the Foreign Service in 1977 after years of work in Uganda, Pakistan and Libya.
