Hugh Wooldridge, an English theatre director, producer and writer, died October 3, 2026, aged 74.

Born in Amersham, Buckinghamshire, on August 18, 1952, he was the son of composer John Wooldridge and actress Margaretta Scott; his sister was actress Susan Wooldridge. He attended Stonyhurst College in Lancashire before training at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art.

Afterward, he assisted directors Alan Ayckbourn, Eric Thompson, Frank Hauser and Michael Blakemore. Wooldridge directed his first play at 16, and in the first decade of his career staged more than 60 productions in London and around the United Kingdom. His early repertoire included work by Ayckbourn. His professional work ranged across directing, theatre and television production, writing and stage lighting design. Later, he focused on large-scale productions, often at the Royal Albert Hall in London. Alongside his work in production, Wooldridge taught through master classes and workshops. His career therefore brought together creative and practical roles in the theatre, from directing plays and designing their lighting to producing performances and passing on his experience through teaching. The range of his work extended from productions across the UK early in his career to large events at one of London’s major concert and performance venues.
