Umer Chapra, a Pakistani–Saudi economist and adviser, died on June 13, 2026, at the age of 93.
Born in Bombay on February 1, 1933, he was also known as Muhammad Umer Chapra and spent much of his career in Saudi Arabia, where he worked for nearly 35 years at the Saudi Arabian Monetary Agency as an economic adviser and later senior economic adviser. He also served as adviser at the Islamic Research and Training Institute of the Islamic Development Bank in Jeddah.
Chapra studied at the University of Sindh and the University of Karachi before continuing his education in the United States. He won the King Faisal International Prize in Islamic Studies in 1990 and authored the 1996 book What Is Islamic Economics?
