Born in Munich in 1931, he studied first at the University of California, Berkeley, where he earned degrees in architecture and English before completing his Ph.D. in English at Princeton. Knoepflmacher was widely known for work in Victorian literature and childhood studies, and for helping establish children’s literature as a serious field of academic inquiry.
