Toshio Masuda, the Japanese film director behind The Battle of Port Arthur, Red Handkerchief and Rusty Knife, died on August 26, 2026, aged 98.
Born in Kobe on October 5, 1927, he built a prolific career as a director, screenwriter and cinematographer after beginning work in 1958. Over the next decade at Nikkatsu, he directed 52 films and became known as the studio’s leading action director, working repeatedly with star Yujiro Ishihara and helping establish a string of box-office successes.
His films remained commercially durable for decades, with 16 reaching the Japanese yearly top 10 box-office lists over the course of his career. Masuda later moved into large-scale productions, including Tora! Tora! Tora! and Prophecies of Nostradamus, and also worked on the Space Battleship Yamato projects.
