A native of Detroit, Michigan, he attended Mackenzie High School and emerged as a versatile competitor who helped lead his Mackenzie Stags to the 1956 Detroit Public Schools Athletic League championship. In the final event against Denby High, Tashnick and teammates Howard Scarborough, J.C.
Smith and Richard Boka secured the school’s first-place finish. That summer, Tashnick, Scarborough and Smith also competed at the United States Olympic Trials as high school All-Americans. He later became a collegiate standout at the University of Michigan, where he won national titles in the 100- and 200-yard butterfly and helped the Wolverines capture the 1958 NCAA swimming championship.
