Tomi Reichental dead at age 90, Slovak-born Irish Holocaust survivor

Tomi Reichental, a Slovak-born Irish Holocaust survivor and author, died on May 31, 2026, at the age of 90.

Born Tomáš Reichental in Merašice, then in Czechoslovakia and now Slovakia, he survived the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp after being forced into hiding with members of his family as anti-Jewish restrictions tightened. He moved to Ireland in 1959 and later spent decades speaking publicly about his wartime experiences.

Reichental was also known for his memoir I Was a Boy in Belsen and for work recognized with honours including the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany, a People of the Year Award and an honorary doctorate.
