Matthew Spender, the English sculptor and writer whose death was announced on May 31, 2026, died at 81.
Born in London in 1945, he was also a painter and biographer, and his work ranged from sculpture to books on family and art. He wrote “From a High Place: A Life of Arshile Gorky” in 1999, a biography of his father-in-law, the artist Arshile Gorky, as well as “A House in St John’s Wood” in 2015, about his father, the poet Stephen Spender.
He also published “Within Tuscany: Reflections on a Time and Place,” first issued in 1992.
