Also known as: Thomas Andrew Heath Yandle.
Tom Yandle, the British farmer and huntsman who served as High Sheriff of Somerset, died October 15, 2026, aged 90.
Born in 1935, he was known formally as Thomas Andrew Heath Yandle and was based at Riphay, in Brushford near Dulverton, Somerset. His public roles connected farming, countryside institutions and hunting: he chaired the Devon and Somerset Staghounds and served as a committee member of both the National Trust and Exmoor National Park.
In 1999, he held the office of High Sheriff of Somerset. Yandle played a leading role in challenging restrictions on hunting with hounds. He opposed the National Trust’s decision to prohibit stag hunting on the Holnicote Estate and the Labour government’s proposal to ban hunting with hounds; the government’s proposal was ultimately successful. His efforts made him a prominent figure in disputes over hunting and countryside management. The Yandle family had earlier been resident at Duvale, an historic estate in the parish of Bampton, Devon. In 1994, he bought Northmoor House, near Dulverton, together with 100 acres of surrounding land; he later sold the property and land.
