Murphy represented Pennsylvania’s 18th congressional district from 2003 until his resignation in 2017 and served in the state Senate’s 37th district from 1996 to 2003. A Republican, he held the congressional seat for four terms, winning reelection comfortably each time and running unopposed in 2014 and 2016. Born Timothy Francis Murphy in Cleveland on September 11, 1952, he was raised in Ohio and later earned degrees from Wheeling Jesuit University, Cleveland State University and the University of Pittsburgh. Before entering politics, he worked as a psychologist and assistant professor.
