Born in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, in 1927, he began his career at The Sault Daily Star, where he worked as a columnist and reporter from 1941 to 1946.
He later studied law in Toronto at Osgoode Hall and became a lawyer in 1954. Torgov went on to serve as a partner at the Toronto law firm Olch, Torgov, Cohen LLP while also building a literary career that earned him recognition as both a novelist and humorist.
