Metcalf, an American historian and academic whose scholarship focused on South Asia, especially colonial India, and the British Empire, died on June 18, 2026. He was 92.

Metcalf was the Emeritus Sarah Kailath Professor of India Studies and professor of history at the University of California, Berkeley, and wrote books including Imperial Connections: India in the Indian Ocean Arena, 1860-1920 and A Concise History of Modern India, which he coauthored with Barbara D. Metcalf. Educated at Amherst College, the University of Cambridge and Harvard University, he was married to the historian Barbara D. Metcalf, who survives him.
