Stephen Greene Irish hurler dead at age 81

Stephen Greene, Irish hurler, died on May 1, 2026, aged 81.

Born in Waterford in 1944, he played at club level with Mount Sion and at inter-county level with the Waterford senior hurling team. Greene came through the juvenile and underage ranks at Mount Sion and was part of the club minor side that won the Waterford MHC title in 1962.

He later won 10 Waterford SHC medals between 1963 and 1986, captaining the team in 1986, and also claimed a Munster Club SHC title. In 1982, he was in goal for Mount Sion in the All-Ireland Club SHC final against James Stephens. For Waterford, he was top scorer in the 1964 Munster U21HC, captained the senior team in 1973, and was selected for Munster’s Railway Cup side the same year.
