Štěpánka Ranošová, the Czech actress and founding member of the Petr Bezruč Theatre in Ostrava, died on October 1, 2026, aged 99.
Born in Mariánské Hory, now part of Ostrava, on October 14, 1926, she studied acting privately with Anna Kratochvílová before joining with director and playwright Oldřich Daněk, artist Otakar Schindler and others to form the student ensemble Kytice in 1945. The group presented a recitation of Czech poetry, Bread with Steel, in the former puppet theatre hall on Masarykovo náměstí, and Ranošová later became a familiar figure on the stage in Ostrava.
Among the roles associated with her career were Stella in A Streetcar Named Desire, Doctor von Zahnd in Physics, Lady Torrance in The Descent of Orpheus, the widow Gurmyžská in Ostrovského Les, Mrs. Dulská in The Morality of Mrs. Dulska and the title role in Mother Courage.
