Ruby Kless Sondock, an American state court judge and former associate justice of the Texas Supreme Court, died on July 21, 2026.
Born in Houston on April 26, 1926, she became the first woman to serve on the Texas Supreme Court. Sondock studied at the University of Houston Law Center, initially intending to train as a legal secretary, and was admitted to the state bar a year before graduating as valedictorian of her class in 1962.
She was later appointed to the Harris County Domestic Relations Court No. 5 in 1973 and to the 234th District Court in 1977. In 1982, she was appointed to the Texas Supreme Court to complete the term of Associate Justice James G. Denton, serving from June 25 to December 31 before returning to her district court seat.
