Kyle, an American academic and longtime Mayo Clinic professor of medicine, laboratory medicine and pathology, died September 2, 2026, aged 98. A pathologist and hematologist, he spent much of his career caring for patients with plasma cell dyscrasias and published more than 1,850 scientific papers and abstracts on myeloma and related disorders.
Born in Bottineau, he became widely known for helping to define monoclonal gammopathy of undetermined significance, or MGUS, and for establishing its epidemiology and long-term prognosis. He was also among the most cited researchers in his field and was known professionally as Robert Kyle.
