Born Gloria Marie Steinem in Toledo, Ohio, she became one of the most recognized leaders of second-wave feminism in the United States during the late 1960s and 1970s. She wrote for Ms.
and New York magazines, was a columnist for New York, and helped launch Ms. magazine. In 1969, her article “After Black Power, Women’s Liberation” brought her national attention, and in 1971 she co-founded the National Women’s Political Caucus to support women seeking public office. Steinem, who was also known as an activist, essayist, editor and lecturer, died in New York City.
