Raif Dizdarević, the Bosnian politician who served as president of the Presidency of Yugoslavia, died on September 2, 2026, aged 99.
Born in Fojnica on December 9, 1926, he became Yugoslavia’s first Bosnian Muslim president of the Presidency, holding the post from 1988 to 1989. Dizdarević was active in the Yugoslav Partisan resistance during World War II and later served as president of the Presidency of SR Bosnia and Herzegovina and as minister of foreign affairs.
He was also a writer, diplomat, trade unionist and political commissar, and was the brother of Zija Dizdarević.
