Rick Adelman, the American Hall of Fame basketball player and coach who led the Portland Trail Blazers, Sacramento Kings and Minnesota Timberwolves, died on June 1, 2026, at age 79.

Born Richard Leonard Adelman in Lynwood, California, he spent the early part of his basketball life at Pius X High School in Downey and then at Loyola Marymount University before beginning his professional career in 1968. Adelman later coached for 23 seasons in the NBA, including stints as head coach of the Trail Blazers, Golden State Warriors, Kings, Houston Rockets and Timberwolves.

He was inducted into the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame in 2021.
