Richard Alston, the British choreographer known for work with Ballet Rambert and The Place, died on September 7, 2026, aged 77.
Born in Sussex and educated at Eton College, he trained as a dancer at the London School of Contemporary Dance before choreographing for the London Contemporary Dance Theatre and forming Strider in 1972, the United Kingdom’s first independent dance company. After studying at the Merce Cunningham Dance Studio in New York in 1976, he became resident choreographer at Ballet Rambert in 1980 and later served as the company’s artistic director from 1986 to 1992.
His repertory included Windhover (1972), Soda Lake (1986) and Pulcinella (1987), and he was later artistic director at The Place.
