He was 92. Born in Paris on July 6, 1934, Urtreger became known as a jazz musician and pianist whose work was rooted in bebop.

He studied piano from the age of four, first in private lessons and later at the Conservatory, and went on to play in Parisian clubs as he developed his jazz style. In the 1950s, he drew notice in Paris performances alongside American jazzmen Don Byas and Buck Clayton, including a much-requested Salon du Jazz appearance.
