Born Jacobus Frederick Beatrix van Wyk in Vereeniging on December 21, 1943, he became known as “Piston” during a career that made him a regular presence in provincial rugby and at Test level. He made his Springbok debut in 1970 against New Zealand at Loftus Versfeld in Pretoria and played in all four Tests of that series, before appearing in subsequent Test campaigns against France and Australia in 1971 and 1972.
