Philippe Samyn dead at age 77, engineer, and urbanist

Philippe Samyn, the Belgian architect, engineer and urbanist, died on May 24, 2026, at the age of 77.

Born in Ghent on September 1, 1948, he built a career that combined architecture and engineering, and was known as Sir Philippe Samyn. His work, according to published biographical summaries, ranged across more than 686 projects, including 250 that were built, and reflected a method centered on efficiency, material use and the relationship between form, function and energy.

His approach also placed a strong emphasis on morphology and on the use of wood, glass, steel and recovered materials.
