Born in Grand Roy, Grenada, on July 9, 1935, he was a singer, songwriter, guitarist and calypsonian whose career began in 1949. Widely called the “Calypso King of the World,” he became one of the genre’s best-known figures, winning Trinidad’s Carnival Road March competition eight times, the Calypso King/Monarch title eight times, and the Calypso King of Kings twice.
He was also known by the name Francisco Slinger and received the Chaconia Medal.
