More about Marianne Helms
Marianne Helms, a German musicologist, died October 17, 2026, aged 90.
Born Marianne Henze in Berlin on July 3, 1936, she began her studies at the Free University of Berlin in 1955. Her academic program brought together historical musicology and ethnomusicology with medieval and modern history.
In 1964, she received her doctorate with a dissertation on the masses of Johannes Ockeghem. Helms remained in Berlin after completing her degree, working as a research assistant at the university’s Musicological Institute from 1965 to 1967. In autumn 1967, she took up a research assistant post at the Johann Sebastian Bach Institute in Göttingen, where she worked through 1978. In 1979, she worked at the Beethoven Archive in Bonn. Her appointments took her from a university musicological institute to specialist institutions in Göttingen and Bonn, tracing a career in music research across three German cities. The positions at the Bach Institute and Beethoven Archive followed her earlier university work, placing her professional activity in both research institute and archive settings.
