Born Mai-Ester Murdmaa in Tallinn on March 31, 1938, she graduated from the Tallinn Ballet School in 1956 and from GITIS in 1964 in ballet master speciality. She danced at the Estonia Theatre from 1956 to 1960, then served as ballet master there from 1964 to 1973 and principal ballet master from 1974 to 2001.
