Tortal, died on September 25, 2026, aged 88. Born in the Philippines on May 5, 1938, under the name Leopoldo Tortal Gaje, Jr., he was introduced to Pekiti-Tirsia at age six by his grandfather, who helped establish the family system in 1897.
Gaje later moved to the United States in 1972 and went on to teach Pekiti-Tirsia to martial arts students, personal security personnel, law enforcement officers and military groups around the world. He was also featured on the covers of several martial arts magazines and was a member of both the Martial Arts Hall of Fame and the Karate Hall of Fame.
