Krishnan, the Indian-born film director and screenwriter, died on September 24, 2026, aged 103. Born Lakshmanan Krishnan on October 21, 1922, in Chennai, he was raised in Penang before beginning his film career in 1942.
He returned to Madras in 1947 as an assistant film director at Kalaivani Films, later moved to Singapore in 1949 to work with Shaw Studio, and then continued his career in Kuala Lumpur after 11 years there. In 1963, he left Studio Merdeka to strike out on his own. Over a career that spanned more than 30 films, Krishnan helped launch the careers of several major figures in the local film industry, including P. Ramlee, Maria Menado, Kasma Booty, Mustapha Maarof, M. Amin, Latifah Omar and Rosnani Jamil.
