Judith Trotter New Zealand diplomat, ambassador to France and Italy dead at age 90

Judith Trotter, a New Zealand diplomat and ambassador to France from 1988 to 1992 and to Italy from 1994 to 1998, died on April 5, 2026, aged 90.

Born in Hāwera on August 30, 1935, she worked at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade from 1965 to 1998, with postings in New Zealand, Athens, Bangkok, Singapore, France, Canada and Italy. She was appointed a Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit in 1996 for services to diplomacy and also received the New Zealand 1990 Commemoration Medal, the New Zealand Suffrage Centennial Medal and France’s National Order of Merit.

Trotter was chair of the France–New Zealand Friendship Fund.
