Joel Gougeon American politician, member of the Michigan Senate dead at age 82

Joel Gougeon, an American politician and Republican member of the Michigan Senate from 1993 to 2002, died on December 21, 2025, at the age of 82.

He represented the 34th district, covering Ogemaw, Arenac, Bay, Tuscola and Huron counties, after first being elected in a 1993 special election. Before serving in the Senate, he was a member of the Bay County Board of Commissioners.

Born in Lansing, he was also a lobbyist for Saginaw Valley State University after leaving the Legislature.

Joel D. Gougeon (January 13, 1943 – December 21, 2025) was an American politician who was a Republican member of the Michigan Senate from 1993 to 2002 representing the 34th district (then Ogemaw, Arenac, Bay, Tuscola, and Huron counties). He previously served as a member of the Bay County Board of Commissioners.
