Jochen Fahrenberg, a German psychologist whose work spanned personality research, psychophysiology and the philosophy of science, died on September 21, 2026, aged 89.
Born in Berlin on September 18, 1937, he studied psychology, sociology and philosophy in Freiburg, London and Hamburg before completing a doctorate at the University of Freiburg. His dissertation examined writing movement parameters through experimental methods and factor analysis.
After working as a research assistant to cardiologist Ludwig Delius in Bad Oeynhausen, he went on to help establish the Freiburg Psychophysiology Research Group in 1970 with Michael Myrtek, supported by the Volkswagen Foundation. In 1973 he was appointed to the chair at the psychology department once held by his academic teacher Robert Heiß, and he later played a central part in the institute’s expansion.
