Herbert Schnitzer dead at age 85, German racing team owner

Herbert Schnitzer, the German racing team owner behind Schnitzer Motorsport, died on June 5, 2026, at the age of 85.

He co-founded the Freilassing-based team in 1967 with his brother Josef Schnitzer, and from its early years the outfit became closely associated with BMW competition programs. Schnitzer Motorsport went on to earn notable results in touring car and sports car racing, often fielding BMW cars under the name BMW Motorsport.

In 2012, the team ran BMW’s DTM program as BMW Team Schnitzer. BMW ended its relationship with Schnitzer Motorsport in 2020 after more than five decades.
