Herbert Laming, Baron Laming, a British social worker and life peer who sat in the House of Lords, died on July 15, 2026, aged 89.

Born William Herbert Laming on July 19, 1936, in Newcastle upon Tyne, he studied Applied Social Studies at Durham University and went on to work as a probation officer and psychiatric social worker in Nottingham before joining Hertfordshire County Council in 1971. He became director of social services in 1975 and entered the House of Lords in 1998.

Laming later served as Convenor of the Crossbench Peers from 2011 to 2015 and as Chairman of Committees from 2015 to 2016. He was awarded the CBE and appointed a Knight Bachelor.
