El-Shamy, the Egyptian-born American folklorist and professor, died on August 16, 2026, at age 88. Born in Cairo, he taught folklore at Indiana University, where he held appointments in the Department of Folklore and Ethnomusicology, the Department of Near Eastern Languages and Cultures, and the African Studies Program.
He earned a B.A. with honors in Arabic and Islamic studies from Ain-Shams University in 1959, completed graduate study in psychology and education there the following year, and later received both an M.A. and a Ph.D. in folklore from Indiana University. El-Shamy was retired and professor emeritus at Indiana University Bloomington at the time of his death, and his books included works such as Folktales of Egypt, Religion Among the Folk in Egypt and Beyond Oedipus.
