Born in Velbert on October 27, 1941, he first trained as a toolmaker before turning to singing. At 28, he began studying at the Hochschule für Musik und Tanz Köln with Else Bischof, and he made his stage debut in 1974 at Theater Aachen as Monterone in Verdi’s Rigoletto, stepping in for an ill singer.
Welker went on to join the Hamburgische Staatsoper in 1982, the Vienna State Opera in 1985 and the Deutsche Oper Berlin in 1987, while also appearing in concerts and television productions.
