
Harald Metzkes, a German painter and graphic artist, died on May 14, 2026, at the age of 97.
Born in Bautzen, Saxony, on January 23, 1929, he grew up there and later pursued art studies after completing his school leaving exams in 1945/46. He studied watercolor painting under Alfred Herzog in 1946 and was apprenticed as a stonemason from 1947 to 1949.
In 1959 he settled on the south side of Berlin and became a freelance artist, with his first exhibition devoted to his work held in Berlin in 1963.
