Born Johannes Cornelis van Houwelingen in Rotterdam on March 25, 1945, he was also a professor emeritus of medical statistics at Leiden University. After graduating from Utrecht University in 1968 with a major in mathematics, he worked at Utrecht University’s Institute for Mathematical Statistics, spent a year at Philips in 1969, then returned to Utrecht.

He earned his doctorate at Utrecht University in 1973 and remained active as an emeritus scholar.
